New CHURCH in the charlotte area- help
Posted: Monday, March 24, 2008 9:32 PM (CST)
My husband and I are planting a church with our pastor and his wife in Charlotte, NC. I am in charge of getting the Children's Ministry started. Where do I begin? What are some great resources? I have names and maybe logos, but I need to know basics. Does anybody know of a great checklist or ideas? Thank you! Right now we are really focusing our energy on security!

There are lots of great books and webs resources out there for CM's that are just starting out. But what I did helped me get over my worries and started me on a path that so far has lasted 17 years.

I called up the Children's pastors who were serving in growing/vibrant churches in my area. I asked each person for 30 minutes of their time and promised to bring a treat and a good coffee for them when I came.

This was in the early 90's and I was serving a church of under 100 people in So. California, so, I went to Saddleback (Ty Rose was the CP) and Coast Hills (Deano), Capo Beach, the Vineyard and a few others. No one turned me away and all spent more than an hour with me, shared their best ideas and worst failures as well as their favorite resources. Each person was generous and wonderful about mentoring and guiding me as I got started and I still follow advise gleaned from these folks, today.

A good place to start might be to read "The Ultimate Survival Guide for Children's Ministry:
Step-by-Step Helps to Make Your Job Easier and More Fulfilling" by Ivy Beckwith. It's compact and concise and would give a good overview of some of the issues you're going to be dealing with, including security. I have a copy I could send you it you'd like. Just let me know at figbeebo at yahoo dot com.
