There are two main types of outreach for children's ministries:
1. Trying to bring children into the church.
2. Trying to bring God's Word into children.
When you think about Christ's ministry on earth he spent much more time speaking outside the church than in. He considered wherever he was to be the church. You probably have several outreaches planned each year that fall under category 1, which is great! VBS, Kids' Crusade, Children's Musical, Upward Sports, Easter Egg Hunt, Harvest Party, Father-Daughter dinner, Father-Son program, Mother-Daughter Tea, etc. All of these are good!
Let's talk about category 2. Can you think of some ways that you can regularly bring God's Word to children outside of the church? It will take committed volunteers BUT they won't need to worry about missing Sunday morning service. Here are some thoughts:
1. Child Evangelism Fellowship: Find out if you have a director in your area. They will help train your workers. They have received permission from the Supreme Court to conduct Bible training on school grounds after regular school hours. You don't have to bring the children to church to teach them. You would want them to get parental permission and you would need to have workers commit to once a week teaching with the kids. Child Evangelism Fellowship has a structured program or you could attend their initial training and pursue your own. You could use the same lessons you use on Sunday. Approach the school humbly. If they allow other groups to meet it is my understanding that religious groups may meet at the school as well. There may be a small janitorial fee.
2. Apartment complexes. Today's apartments often have a meeting area and play area. You could speak to the management about conducting a weekly meeting in their meeting room. Start off on a trial basis. Again, you would want parental permission. The letter would state that this is not affiliated with the apartment complex or its management. Your attendance would be fairly regular as children live here, but you will need a couple of runners to knock on doors to remind them that you're back for another week. ALWAYS send people door to door in two's.
3. Booths at Fairs and Festivals: Many churches have tried inviting people to their church this way. Instead, have a prayer booth. Simply have chairs where you can sit with people and pray and show them one or two scriptures which apply to their prayer need. Have facial tissues handy. This is an adult outreach, rather than for kids.
4. Puppet show at fairs and festivals: Many state and county fairs will allow a Christian puppet show. They appreciate the entertainment. Keep the message positive. Songs are an easy way to go but be sure to add a short message.
5. Christmas Bazaar: Give the Biblical Christmas story at a Christmas bazaar. The sound should not carry beyond your booth. Malls may even be open to letting your children's choir perform a few songs from your Christmas musical during the holiday season.
